Firecheck™ Flame Retardant for Fabrics and Paper
Firecheck™ is a water-based flame-retardant treatment for fabrics, paper and other water-absorbent materials. Supplied ready to use, it is easy to apply without specialist equipment and is particularly useful for theatres, events, scenic production and other environments where fabrics and materials may be exposed to naked flames or heat.
Firecheck™ is absorbed into the material and forms an invisible barrier. When exposed to heat, the treated surface forms a carbonised shield that helps deflect heat and reduce the gases that support combustion.

Suitable Materials
Firecheck™ can be used on many water-absorbent materials, including:
- Natural and synthetic fabrics
- Cardboard and paper
- Hessian
- Foam rubber
- Polystyrene
- Scenic flats and other scenic materials
Always test a small or inconspicuous area before treating the full item, particularly with unfamiliar or newly developed materials.
Theatre & Scenic Applications
Firecheck™ is particularly useful for treating:
- Theatre drapes and fabrics
- Costumes
- Scenery and scenic flats
- Artwork and displays
- Props and other absorbent scenic materials
It can also be used when preparing scenic flats for painting. When using powder or concentrated scenic paints, Firecheck™ can be used instead of water when diluting the paint.
Application
Ensure the material is clean and dry before treatment. Apply a fine mist of Firecheck™ evenly over all exposed surfaces. The material does not need to be soaked.
Allow the treated material to dry completely before use. Once dry, the treatment is virtually unnoticeable.
Firecheck™ is supplied ready to use and should not be diluted.
Important
Firecheck™ relies on the material being able to absorb the treatment. It is not suitable for plastics, waterproofed fabrics, waxed cardboard, painted or varnished surfaces, or rip-stop nylon.
Avoid contact with metal surfaces and wipe clean immediately if contact occurs.
If a material is unfamiliar or you are unsure whether it is suitable for treatment, we recommend testing a small area first.
Fire Retardancy Testing
The manufacturer states that Firecheck™ has undergone independent testing by UKAS and BTTG-accredited Fire Technology Services and has passed:
-
BS 5852:1990 – natural and synthetic fibres
-
BS 5867: Part 2:1980 – natural and synthetic fibres
Testing includes materials such as cotton, wool, cotton-backed Draylon, nylon and cotton/polyester blends.
