LEE 599 Nocturnal Blue is a specialist window gel developed to create a realistic day-for-night effect for film, television, photography and theatre productions.

Designed for application directly to windows and glazed surfaces, 599 Nocturnal Blue reduces daylight transmission by approximately 8 stops while introducing a cool blue tint. This allows interior scenes to be filmed during daylight hours while maintaining the appearance of night outside the window.

By replacing multiple layers of neutral density and colour correction filters with a single sheet, LEE 599 simplifies installation, reduces material costs and helps minimise waste on set.

Key Benefits

  • Creates a realistic day-for-night window effect
  • Reduces daylight transmission by approximately 8 stops
  • Adds a cool blue tint for natural-looking night scenes
  • Allows exterior movement and scenery to remain visible
  • Single-filter solution replaces multiple layered filters
  • Saves installation time and reduces material waste

Temporary Installation

For short-term installations, the gel can be secured using clear double-sided tape.

Apply small strips around the edge of the glass before positioning the filter. Please note that the tape may be visible through the gel depending on the viewing angle and lighting conditions.

Recommended Wet Fitting Method

For a professional finish, we recommend applying the filter using a simple wet fitting method. This provides accurate positioning, a smooth bubble-free finish and allows the filter to be removed when no longer required.

When applied to clean, smooth glass, the filter is suitable for temporary or longer-term installations, depending on the application and environmental conditions

Guide to Fitting Lighting Filters to Glass

  1. Cut the filter to the required size.
  2. Clean the glass thoroughly using clean water with a small amount of washing-up liquid and a lint-free cloth.
  3. Fill a spray bottle with clean water and add a small amount of washing-up liquid.
  4. Spray the glass evenly with the solution.
  5. Lightly spray one side of the filter.
  6. Position the filter onto the wet glass.
  7. Spray the outer surface of the filter and use a clean rubber window squeegee to remove air bubbles, working from the centre outwards.
  8. Wipe away any remaining moisture using a clean lint-free cloth.
